HISTORY

FORMATIVE_EVENT
  • FIRST EVENT: - First Death – As a young man in Beijing, Shen Yuan was an avid hate-reader of the erotic dark fantasy novel Proud Immortal Demon Way, a self-published work that he frequently derides as amateurish and juvenile in its plotting and secondary characters. Yet he was obsessed over the protagonist Luo Binghe, a fact that technically lead to Shen Yuan’s own demise; when the novel finally staggered to an inglorious end, he was so busy cursing the author out in the comments section that he didn’t even notice his own body shutting down from food poisoning. Only somebody as obsessively passionate as Shen Yuan stood a chance of fixing the plot and returning “PIDW” to its author’s original vision, although it takes him hundreds of pages and multiple deaths to do it.

  • SECOND EVENT: - Skinner Demon – Before he could even start working on the plot, Shen Qingqiu (nee Yuan) had to unlock the “OOC controls,” restrictions placed on his actions by the System which prevented him from doing anything the original goods would absolutely not do, such as be nice to Luo Binghe. Which was a real problem, because the new Shen Qingqiu passionately wished to be nice to Luo Binghe! To make matters worse, the mission required to unlock the OOC controls involved a logic puzzle, which it turns out is not Shen Qingqiu’s forte! He and two of his disciples are kidnapped by the very killer he’s supposed to bring to justice, and the fiend nearly steals his stolen body before he figures out two things: 1) the System has absolute power over this world, and 2) it absolutely won’t allow Luo Binghe to come to harm except when it’s plot-mandated.

Thus Shen Qingqiu taunts the killer into attacking Luo Binghe, triggering the System safeguards and causing a practically brand-new ceiling beam to fall on their head. Case closed!

  • THIRD EVENT: - Post-Endless Abyss – Shen Qingqiu’s absolute nadir in the story. Although he suffered many hardships after this, at no other time does he come so close to giving into despair as after he pushed Luo Binghe into the Endless Abyss. He wandered his peak like a ghost, not eating, sleeping, or talking to anybody, and spent hours gazing at the memorial he erected to Luo Binghe. The only thing that snapped him out of it was the knowledge that Luo Binghe would return, and he’d definitely want to rip Shen Qingqiu’s limbs off for betraying him if Shen Qingqiu didn’t come up with some way to get out of it. His plans, although clever, ultimately made the situation even worse for him and Binghe both…

ABILITIES

ABILITYStandard cultivator abilities; the ability to perceive spiritual and resentful energies, and collect and store the former; the ability to cast spells or store them in talismans for later activation; the ability to commune with a spiritual weapon and use it for both swordplay and flight.

Further notes: Shen Qingqiu comes with a content warning for internalized homophobia. Although he does not feel romantic or sexual attraction for women, he is convinced that he does, and that he is simply unable to find a romantic partner due to his own physical unattractiveness or outside factors. He is not aware of his own tendency to blatantly flirt with attractive men, and will mistake reciprocal flirtation for platonic affection at best. He will respond to explicit come-ons with shock and refusal; getting him over this hurdle is one of the themes I intend to explore in Rubi.

    AGE: 30+

    IC INFORMATION.

    BASICS
CHARACTER NAME: Yuan Shen, aka Qingqiu Shen
(Please note that as this character is Chinese, his name normally follows the Family Name first, Given Name second convention; I have followed this convention except where directly asked to do otherwise while writing this application, as it feels more natural to do so while discussing his actions and canon history.)

CANON: The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (novel version)

CANON POINT: Halfway into Volume 2, immediately after his apparent suicide via core self-destruction; he gave all of his spiritual energy to deuteragonist Luo Binghe in order to prevent the latter suffering a qi deviation, and shortly afterward died in Luo Binghe’s arms.

AGE: Late 20s to early 30s. Shen Yuan’s inner monologue alludes to his having completed university, which in mainland China usually begins at 18 and takes four to six years. Therefore his minimum age at the beginning of volume 1 would have been 22; seven years pass in canon before his apparent suicide in volume 2, so his minimum age at that point would have been 29. It’s possible he was older at either point, but for convenience I play him as no older than 33 at the time of his “second death.”

    BACKGROUND
HISTORY: Shen Yuan was born into a wealthy family, in a world like ours. Although he had a privileged childhood, he doesn’t mention any close relationships outside of the family circle, or a job, or any passions from webnovels: specifically fantasy, isekai, and stallion novels. The last novel he ever read – evocatively titled Proud Immortal Demon Way – was the most popular “book of the year” on its publishing website, but Shen Yuan’s descriptions of it are surprisingly negative. He complains about the book’s length, its pacing, the number of plot holes and the low IQs of antagonists and love interests alike. It seems that the only quality PIDW had that he approved of was its protagonist, Luo Binghe, and Shen Yuan spends paragraphs upon paragraphs praising Luo Binghe’s coolness, his intelligence, his martial prowess, his masterful manipulative skills and the size of his penis. Indeed, it seems like Shen Yuan’s biggest complaint about PIDW is that it’s an unworthy setting for the glittering gem of an antihero that is Luo Binghe.

Naturally he was outraged when PIDW finally staggered its way to an inglorious end, taking its protagonist down with it. We’re never told about the ending in detail, but Shen Yuan was so angry about it that he spent hours ranting and raving on the hosting website, and that he was so busy typing up complaints that he literally failed to notice his own body weakening from a sudden bout of food poisoning. He literally died cursing the author’s name (well, handle) – and that was how he attracted the attention of the System.

The System is a mysterious entity of unknown origin, but it has an interest in stories and tropes. It implants Shen Yuan’s soul in the body of one of the characters near the beginning of PIDW’s storyline, and charges him with improving the plot and side characters until it becomes a “true classic.” Shen Yuan is horrified; not only has he died, but he was put in the body of one of Luo Binghe’s first and most loathsome antagonists: his abusive teacher, Shen Qingqiu! Not only does Shen Qingqiu’s role in the story end when he is literally ripped limb from limb and left to die of starvation and infection in a dark dungeon, but Shen Yuan himself was one of the readers clamoring for him to be castrated after he was accused in-universe of trying to groom one of Luo Binghe’s future wives, fellow disciple Ning Yingying! The irony is palpable, and he throws many a fit about it in the privacy of his own mind before finally resigning himself to…some of his fate.

After this point in the story, Shen Yuan adopts the Shen Qingqiu name and identity, but he doesn’t forget his own backstory, or his foreknowledge of the plot. At first he thinks that if he’s nice to Luo Binghe instead of abusive, maybe he can change the story enough to avoid painfully executed. So for three years he spoils Luo Binghe rotten, giving him hours of personal training and attention, along with enough gentle affection to make any onlooker believe that he and Luo Binghe will be joined at the hip for life. But the demands of the plot are not to be denied: when Luo Binghe is seventeen, a rift into the hellish Endless Abyss opens, and Shen Qingqiu must choose between throwing his disciple inside, or allowing the System to “close his account;” a move that would certainly spell certain death.

He chooses to live, and betray Luo Binghe.

After that, Shen Qingqiu thinks he’s done for. What does it matter how nice he was to Luo Binghe? The suffering he’ll be forced to endure in the Endless Abyss will certainly blacken his heart, and when he comes back out he’ll certainly want to pay his wicked master back with blood! So Shen Qingqiu develops a second plan: he’ll die, and escape the plot completely.

Of course he’s not really suicidal! But he happens to remember a certain magical fungus from one of PIDW’s many overwrought story arcs, described and then cast aside, that under the right conditions could be used to grow a living vessel for a cultivator’s spirit: a back-up body, in other words! Growing one of these bodies and transferring his spirit into becomes Shen Qingqiu’s next goal, and though it doesn’t go off without a hitch, at least one of the fungal bodies is ready in time for Luo Binghe’s return from the Abyss; and a good thing too, because not only does he come back early, but he immediately begins taking steps to isolate and imprison Shen Qingqiu!

Despite Shen Qingqiu’s best efforts to escape and avoid direct contact with Luo Binghe, he is eventually cornered and the two of them fight, at which point Shen Qingqiu realizes that things are even worse than they appear. Although he obtained his legendary sword Xin Mo in the Abyss, Luo Binghe has yet to master it, and Shen Qingqiu realizes that the sword is feeding on Binghe’s turmoil over his master’s betrayal and worsening his spiritual injuries. A qi deviation is imminent – and Shen Qingqiu had already had quite enough of watching Binghe suffer for his actions. He destroyed his own core, passing all of his borrowed body’s spiritual energy into Binghe’s veins – and died in his arms. The last thing Shen Qingqiu said to his heartbroken disciple was, “For all that has passed, I replay you today.”

    And then…he woke up elsewhere.

PERSONALITY: Answer three of the following questions. Limit this section to 500-1,000 words in total, or 150-300 words per question.
  • What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?

  • How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?

  • Shen Yuan is at his best and most impressive when he doesn’t have time to think. In situations where he has the chance to carefully plan his course of action or worse, decides there’s no need for him to get involved at all, he will frequently be paralyzed by confusion and indecision while the chance to fix things slips by. In an emergency, however, especially when lives are at risk, he is able to quickly pull together disparate pieces of information and put into action plans that his opponents almost never anticipate. In volume 1, for example, when he, Luo Binghe, and another disciple are kidnapped by a Skinner Demon, Shen Yuan quickly realizes that he is not capable of defeating the demon on his own. However, he also knows that as the protagonist, Luo Binghe cannot be seriously harmed or killed by anything in the story. After confirming this with the System, Shen Yuan taunts the Skinner Demon into striking Luo Binghe on the head – but before the blow can land, a “brand new” beam suddenly falls out of the ceiling, knocking the Skinner Demon to the ground and “coincidentally” loosening Luo Binghe’s bonds. He immediately steals Shen Yuan’s sword back from the stunned demon and frees Shen Yuan, who finishes the demon off with a palm strike. It was the first time he’d ever killed anyone – though he quickly tries to assure himself that it doesn’t really count. After all, the Skinner Demon is just a character in a book.
  • What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?

  • Without a doubt, Shen Yuan’s biggest regret is throwing Luo Binghe into the Endless Abyss. Although he knew for certain that Luo Binghe would survive and grow stronger, and that he himself would definitely die if he refused, he still feels that he did something terrible in betraying Luo Binghe’s trust, and his guilt and regret color every action he takes for the rest of the book.

In the immediate aftermath he is acutely depressed and nearly falls into a dissociative fugue: he wanders around his home in a daze, barely eating or speaking to anybody. The only project he engaged in with any degree of attention is erecting a sword mound for Luo Binghe in his backyard, and he is heard calling for his lost disciple several times. Those who saw him during this period describe him as acting “like a bereaved widow,” a description that embarrasses him but which he notably cannot bring himself to openly deny.

Once Luo Binghe returns, Shen Yuan is terrified of him, and believes that just as in the book, Luo Binghe means to make him suffer before he dies. To avoid this fate he lies, betrays people, and even attempts to fake his own death, further breaking Luo Binghe’s heart in the process. It doesn’t matter how many hints the protagonist drops that actually, all he wants is an apology: Shen Yuan refuses to see them, until finally a new, unprecedented revelation – that Binghe actually wants to bone him – shocks him out of his rut and gets him to see the protagonist in a new light.
  • What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?

  • What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?
Apart from his fear of being tortured to death by Luo Binghe, Shen Yuan's greatest fear is letting down or endangering the people he cares about. He quickly forms strong bonds with the other members of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, especially the disciples and peak lords Liu Qingge and Yue Qingyuan. During the period when he is a wanted fugitive, he twice exposes himself to danger in order to protect disciples of CQMS, a fact Luo Binghe exploits in order to draw him out of hiding a third time and finally capture him. He overcomes his terror of Luo Binghe to protect Liu Qingge in battle against him twice, and when Luo Binghe lays siege to CQMS Shen Yuan finally surrenders himself to Binghe rather than see CQMS come to any harm.

In the collectivist, Confucian-derived society of a Chinese martial sect, this isn’t seen as a noble sacrifice, but rather a grave insult. Liu Qingge addresses Shen Qingqiu: “You fear becoming a burden to Cang Qiong Mountain, but Cang Qiong Mountain fears not your burden.” In this understated way, he is begging Shen Qingqiu not to surrender to Luo Binghe; to trust in his martial family’s loyalty and their ability to protect him.

But in the original PIDW, Luo Binghe slew every one of the peak lords and razed Cang Qiong Mountain Sect to the ground. Shen Yuan cannot bear the thought of seeing it happen again. He turns his back on his sect and leaves with Luo Binghe.

  • POWERS
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Shen Qingqiu possessed all the normal skills expected of an immortal cultivator. He was an expert martial artist and swordsman, and could generate cutting blades of light from the edges of his sword or fan. He could imbue random objects such as fallen leaves with his qi and turn them into aimable flying blades, or use his qi to heal injuries on himself or others. He could leap great distances and fly on his sword. He was able to draw talismans with magical effects useful for exploration and exorcism.

NERFING: At 20% strength Shen Yuan’s abilities are like those of a martial artist in a non-magical setting, such as a Bruce Lee movie or the manga Lone Wolf and Cub. He is strong and has excellent reflexes, and could easily defend himself against another human being. However, he has no supernatural abilities and would find himself outmatched against opponents with superhuman abilities.

    Character Base

    • Character Name: Shen Yuan (alias Shen Qingqiu)
    • Age: Canon age unclear; is obviously part of the Millennial generation and spent at least one year at university, so I'll be playing him as somewhere in the range of 25-30. Transmigrated into a 37 year old immortal body.
    • Canon (Date/Year Released)/Canon Point: Canon began serialization in 2014; I will assume that this is the year Shen Yuan's first body died, and he spent another three years as an immortal cultivator before transmigrating to Deer Country.
    • Items Coming Along: Xui Ya Sword (nerfed), a painted silk fan, a silver hair ornament [SOLD] and ribbons, a counterfeit jade Guanyin pendant, and set of five silk robes, white and green (this counts as a single "outfit" by xianxia standards, I swear!)
Content Warnings for Character: Character's canonical actions revolve his attempts to avoid torture and dismemberment, which was described on-screen; canon also includes descriptions of predatory monsters and the results of their attacks on human characters.

    Character Background

    • History: Shen Yuan is described as a "second-gen" rich kid in modern China; with wealthy parents and two older brothers in line to inherit the family business, he saw little point in striving or working harder than he had to to keep up appearances. Shen Yuan lived according to the principle that finishing in the top ten was fine, as long as the contest had more than ten people. Despite all of his family's wealth and privilege and his own access to a university education, he spent his days reading trashy webnovels and getting into flame wars on the internet until the day came that he finished "Proud Immortal Demon Way," a stallion novel of extraordinary length and negative quality. His admiration (read: closeted crush) on the protagonist was only exceeded by his hatred for the lame harem politics, abandoned plot threads, and cheesy sex scenes; the ending enraged him so much that he accidentally ate expired food, contracted food poisoning without noticing, and died.
He woke up in the body of Peak Lord Shen Qingqiu, scum villain of "Proud Immortal Demon Way" and abusive teacher of its protagonist, Luo Binghe. In the book, Luo Binghe eventually avenged himself on Shen Qingqiu by literally tearing him limb from limb and leaving him to rot in a dungeon -- so of course Shen Yuan immediately turned all his thoughts towards avoiding this terrible fate. Unfortunately his actions were restricted by the mysterious "System," an omnipotent intelligence with the voice of Google Translate that simultaneously encouraged him to amend the plot of the novel until it was a "true classic" that would satisfy its readers, while blocking his every attempt to prevent Luo Binghe's "blackening" into the wicked, vengeful protagonist that killed the canonical Shen Qingqiu. By the end of the first volume, Shen Yuan's efforts appear to have been ultimately futile: he was unable to avoid pushing Binghe into the purgatorial Endless Abyss, and is now himself trapped in limbo while he waits for Binghe to return with his cursed sword and protagonist power-up to seek his revenge. However, an alliance with another transmigrator -- who turns out to be the author of "Proud Immortal Demon Way," "Great Master" Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky himself -- gives him a way out. Using the Sun and Moon Dew Seed, Shen Qingiu and Airplane-bro plan to create back-up bodies for themselves for their souls to flee to, in the event of their fated demises. But in this timeline even this plan turns out to be pointless, as Shen Yuan transmigrates into the world of Deer Country! Better yet, Luo Binghe doesn't even seem to exist in this world, thank god! Sorry for ditching you, Airplane-bro, but in Shen Yuan's defense it really wasn't his call to make!
    • Core Relationships: Luo Binghe -- the protagonist of "Proud Immortal Demon Way" and Shen Qingqiu's disciple. In attempt to make up for the abuses of the original Shen Qingqiu, Shen Yuan showered him with affection, personal instruction, and the best training material Qing Jing Peak could provide. Though their relationship during this phase of the story was NOT sexual (Shen Yuan appears to have completely suppressed his crush on the OG!Binghe in favor of being a good mentor to the teenaged version) they enjoyed an unusually high degree of intimacy even by the standards Asian martial arts traditions, with Binghe moving into the spare room in Shen Qingqiu's house, cooking for him every day, doing the housekeeping, etc and Binghe shows the first hints of developing a physical attraction to Shen Qingqiu even before he begins to outwardly turn over a new leaf. Though Binghe takes on an antagonistic role for a while after his return from the Endless Abyss, as is common in Chinese BL novels, he is nevertheless the love interest to Shen Yuan's "crypto protagonist"...not that you could convince Shen Yuan of that!
Shang Qinghua/Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky: the author of "Proud Immortal Demon Way," Airplane apparently died in a freak electrocution accident after posting the final chapter of his most popular work, and woke up in the body of cannon fodder. He joins forces with Shen Qingqiu in order to avoid his ignoble death, and Shen Qingqui would argue that that is the full extent of their relationship -- but in reality the two quickly become good if volatile friends, united in their shared origins and Shen Qingqiu's burning need for a punching bag upon which to vent his frustrations with this crapsack world Airplane created.
Yue Qingyuan -- Sect Leader of Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, the headmaster to Shen Qingqiu's teaching position. A gentle and kindly man, Shen Yuan doesn't understand why he's so solicitous towards his most troubled and least popular Peak Lord, but he nevertheless appreciates Yue Qingyuan's "big brotherly" aura (when he's not interally mocking Yue for sounding a bit like a quest-giving NPC, anyway).
Liu Qingge -- In PIDW, Peak Lord Liu Qingge died mysteriously in the spiritual caves of Cang Qiong Mountain, and his death was eventually pinned on Shen Qingqiu and used to discredit him so completely that nobody remained to stop Luo Binghe from taking his revenge. Shen Yuan saves his life, hoping that Liu Qingge might be an ally in the future -- and though Liu Qingge is suspicious of Shen Qingqiu's seemingly unnatural change of heart, he nevertheless returns the favor when Shen Qingqiu receives a poisoned wound during a demonic invasion shortly afterwards. He helps Shen Qingqiu manage the poison for the next three years, and though their relationship remains volatile Shen Yuan is sure Liu Qingge is someone he can rely on in dire straits -- especially if those straits involve hitting a monster with a sword until it dies.

    Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences: Empathy. Shen Yuan hates being a witness to suffering, and will do whatever he can to stop it. This is seen when he sees Binghe being picked on and forced to run on a dusty road into town while the other disciples ride on horses; despite the fact that his actions are being restricted by the System, he argues it down into letting him invite Binghe into his carriage, protecting him from the bullies.
Lore Enthusiast. Despite having apparently shotgunned the excessively, overly-padded entirey of "Proud Immortal Demon Way" in a mere twenty days, Shen Yuan still retains enough memories of the first arc to guide Binghe and save his life on more than one occassion. When Binghe and Shen Yuan are pulled into a dream world by the demon Meng Mo, Shen Yuan remembers that the constructs he and Binghe see in the dream world are constructed from Binghe's own mind, meaning that any attack made on the own constructs will reflect back on Binghe himself. When Binghe loses control of his emotions and attempts to strike a construct with his qi, Shen Yuan takes the blow for Binghe's sake, impressing his student further. More generally he remembers the names and weaknesses of every monster he read about in PIDW, and is able to pick up enough cultivation skills to pass for a real Peak Lord by reading every single book in the Qing Jing library.
(2+) Negative Experiences: Closed Mind. While normally good at taking in and synthesizing new information, Shen Yuan has a massive blindspot when it comes to emotions, especially the romantic variety. He completely fails to notice Luo Binghe's crush on him, leading to trouble both in the first volume and throughout the story. During the journey to the Immortal Alliance Conference, Shen Yuan takes notice of the beautiful young warrior Liu Mingyan, who in canon was one of Luo Binghe's chief wives. Binghe notices his teacher's attention and engages Liu Mingyan in conversation in order to subtly draw her away from Shen Yuan's carriage -- not, as Shen Yuan thinks, because he's interested in Liu Mingyan and wants to spend time with her away from their teachers, but because he's jealous of *Shen Yuan's* attention and wants to block his wandering eye.
Overly Critical. The glossary at the back of my edition describes Shen Yuan as a borderline toxic fan. He left harsh comments on several chapters of PIDW and both joined in and started flame wars on the website where PIDW was hosted. While he stopped short of harassing Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky on social media or reading pirated versions of the book, the impression he left was so strong that Airplane still remembered his handle over thirty years later (from Airplane's perspective). While he rarely shows this side of his personality to its fullest extent in person, it sneaks through in the condescending way he treats other people, such as by mentally comparing Yue Qingyuan to an NPC or the passive aggressive way he responds to criticism from Qi Qingqi. Under high-stress situations, or if he were in a place where he thought he was free of consequences, it might come out again.

    Deer Country Attributes

    • Canon Powers: Qi manipulation. Though Shen Yuan's body apparently lost its golden core in its most recent transmigration, he retains the ability to sense the flow of spiritual energy in his body and manipulate it for small magical tasks, such as turning a fistful of leaves into floating blades or ejecting weaker poisons from his body before they can do harm. He cannot, however, project his soul outside his body, absorb spiritual energy from other bodies or geographic locations, or use the Xiu Ya sword to its furthest extent. This last point I'd like to unlock through in-character research and relationships.
    • Blood Type: Darkblood.
    • Omen: Xiu Ya sword. This spiritual weapon was first claimed by Shen Qingiu, and then rewritten by the System to be used by Shen Yuan. The spirit within seems unusually cognizant since being dragged into a new world by the Pthumerians, and will not allow Shen Yuan to yield it -- yet. It doesn't bear a grudge against him, but like any spiritual weapon it refuses to be wielded by someone who hasn't yet proven themselves worthy. Perhaps regrowing his golden core will be enough win over this recalcitrant weapon?
    • Blessed Day: June 22, representing the 22nd chapter of the Seven Seas English translation of "The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System." Chapter 22 contains the Immortal Alliance Conference and Binghe's descent into hell, so from Shen Yuan's perspective it's when things REALLY get bad.
    • Patron Pthumerian: Remina
    • Blood Power Manifestation: There's something not quite right about Shen Yuan's powers. He can feel the qi circulating in his body, but it pulses with the beat of his heart and follows the blood in his circulatory system, instead of having its own set of spiritual veins. Xiu Ya too, is different here. He can feel an *awareness* in the sword, a sense of personhood that was never there before. Or did he just not know how to see it? Is he too married to the concept of seeing everything through a cultivational genre lense, or is magic just magic regardless of what you call it? He wants to learn more, he wants to learn EVERYTHING, but this seems like such a dangerous world, maybe he should focus on honing his self-defense skills first. Spiritual swords like Xiu Ya respond best to powerful cultivators with advanced golden cores, so maybe if he grows a new core the sword will be more willing to cooperate with him. It seems like as good a place to start as any.

(OOC: I want to Shen Yuan to spend time researching and tinkering with his powers before they manifest into a concrete set of abilities, and I'm interested in exploring the potential consequences of making the local magic system behave like another one. In cultivator settings like Scum Villain or The Untamed (which were created by the same author!) magic users advance their abilities by condensing their spiritual powers into a golden core, which forms in the lower abdomen and behaves like a supernumary organ. What would happen if Shen Yuan tried to condense his Darkblood into a new organ in his lower body cavity? Would it power him up, or kill him? That's what I want to play around with IC, at least for the first year of gameplay.)
